Back in high school, I had a friend that drove a 2007 M6 convertible M6 with a 6MT. He had originally been given an automatic 1997 528i as his first car, but had sold it. Consequently , he was carless, so his parents basically gave him the 2007 M6 they had leased to drive. You know what’s awesome? Being 18 and having a 500hp V10 BMW to drive around in. Being a lease, he didn’t mind if we practiced learning stick on it. While it wasn’t the first manual car I had driven, it was the first manual car I had a decent amount of seat time in.
We took it to the Target parking lot by my house one time and that’s where I practiced starting in first. It was truly the first car I was able to make move every time I engaged the clutch. I was already infatuated with BMWs, especially M cars, this cemented it. Driving around with the top down and that V10 screaming was intoxicating.
At some point later, I was in another friends neighborhood and wanted to drive the M6 again, so my friend obligated . I was driving on the road that left the neighborhood. This road had a 35 MPH speed limit that I’m pretty sure I was exceeding. It wasn’t exorbitant speed, but it was speeding, nevertheless. I was driving at somewhere between 35-50 MPH, I honestly have no idea how fast I was going.
Well, there was this young girl on her bike riding on the side of the road. Since there was no one coming the other way, I put most of the car into the other lane. Once again, I can’t recall how far over the yellow line I was, I just know I wasn’t completely in the right lane. Right as I was about to pass her, she, for some reason, decided that it was a good time to take a 90º turn and cross the street.
I see this and immediately put both the clutch and the brake pedals to the floor. It felt as if we stopped instantaneously. The girl would have been in the middle of car’s path, had we continued . We both looked at each other with the full knowledge of what almost happened. I’m pretty sure we both gave the “I’m sorry” wave, both realizing the magnitude of wha t almost happened.
Shortly afterwards, my friend had me change seats with him so he could drive us back to my other friends house.
Being 18 years old in a 500hp car, I was glad this was the worst thing that happened.

That’s some responsible parenting.

Reminds me of the time, years ago, I was smacked with the reality that my reckless driving could kill someone other than me. I still speed but not recklessly like I did before that day. I was being so immensely stupid (obviously), that I don’t know how I survived. I came over a crest doing 100mph on a 2 lane road. There was a minivan pulling out of a hidden drive, full of mom, dad, and kids on Sunday morning probably headed to church. I avoided them by going completely in the other lane nearly losing control. I was so sick I wanted to literally die, actually thought about ending it that night. Then I realized I could just be a grown up and not be a menace to society. I still wish I could apologize to them, at the time I was too scared and just took off because I knew the police would rightfully take my license.

Yeah, I’ve done worse in a 190-hp B5 Passat. Glad we all survived through those crazy immature days.

Yeah that would be a wake up call for sure.
I’m an aggressive driver, but I try not to be excessive. My parents came to town and I might have taken an offramp too fast and my mom grabbed the oh shit handle, maybe I should have offer ed to drive them around in the M3.

I think I did dumber things in my Explorer than I ever did the M6. I went the same speed in my Explorer on that road as I did the M6, I guess I just got lucky.
When you’re young with a car, you’re going to do dumb things. I mean I got my M3 at 24, and at that age people still do dumb things.

I am sure I would have put it into a fence or a tree. Fortunately, neither my parents or those of my friends were over-monied enough to give a kid a late model V10 BMW.
Fun thing, it might not have hurt the looks of an E64 ;)

I’m not calling you liar. I’m merely suggesting you could be lying.

I mean, I’ve had the M3 for over 4 years and I have 0 speeding tickets because of it.

I was hoping the "favoriting" of your post would be a signal that I am busting the balls as they say.

The Target parking lot, in an M6? How did you not find your future wife that evening?

The closest I’ve come to hitting someone with my car it was truly heart wrecking.
I live in an apartment with an underground parking area, whenever I took my Grand Cherokee out the hood would block out maybe 1-1.5m. Well, one day, I was taking my jeep out trying to be careful when a child zipped past me on a bicycle, I only saw him through the corner of my view field. I stomped the brake s and started hearing shouts from the parents, I was really scared.
Turns out, the child had gone past me with no issue, and the parents were scolding the child. They went right past me and gave me a thumbs up... signaling that no, I did not hit their todler.
Another time, also on the jeep, I was speeding down an empty avenue (80km\h in a 50 zone) when a dude decided to cross the street while I had the right of way. I had calculated that the dude would’ve already crossed by the time I got close to the intersection so rather than braking I lifted off , but the dude stopped and ran back to the middle of the road as if he had forgotten something on the other side. I was too close for comfort and my horn went blaring, I clamped my brakes and I turned to the right sharply, but the dude ran towards my car, so i turned left abruptly (all very safe in a GC I must add ) and the dude also turned left. By then I had almost slowed down to 0 and the dude stayed terrified in the middle of the street. I put my hazards on so that any incoming cars stopped and let the man out of the road.

No shit. I would have been dead driving that car when I was 18. I had a 8 valve Saab 900, and the speeds I achieved and things I tried were truly frightening looking back on it 25 years later. I doubt I’d have lived through the first week driving an M6.

I started driving in a 66 Galaxie with a 390/4V. Even though it was not a weak engine, that was a lot of mass to move around, and I am surprised I didn’t get in more trouble.
